Yellow Jackets, Wasps , Hornets: At some Point, Every Home will have a Problem with these Stinging Pests
Wasps and yellow jackets are a part of the outdoors in the Northwest. We have all had those cook out plans that went bad when those Bees showed up and tried to eat all of the food first. Or the time you went out to mow the lawn and got swarmed by a nest you didn't know was there until it was too late. What is a home owner to do?
Inspections Every home owner should do a visual inspection of their home very two weeks during the warm weather months. You want to look for small nests that are just getting started. Look at the eves of the house and the vents to the crawl space for activity. Wasps will make an exposed comb nest while Yellow Jackets and hornets make a grey circular inclosed nest.
Treatment When both nests are small you can take care of them yourself with any over the counter wasp spray. The populations are small and there is very little threat of attack. NOTE. If you see the bees going into an area but do not see the nest, DO NOT SPRAY. Your not be able to kill the nest with an over the counter spray. You need a gas or you need to get right up there with the bees to see the nest. You need to treat the nest not the bees. If you find anything bigger then a golf-ball size nest be very careful, there will be more then just a few bees in there.
No Nest found, Still lots of Bees. Yellow jackets can travel from a long ways away to find your cook out. If you are unable to locate a nest on your property you may be drawing them from another site. In this case you can not kill the nest off but you don't want to be ran out of your own back yard for the summer. There are allot of over the counter bee traps that work good but don't stop all of the bees. The best one to purchase is a Pheromone attractive trap. As the bees are drawn to your yard they pick up the pheromone sent and go to the trap instead of your cook out. These traps work well but won't stop all of them. We have some clients that get Yellow Jackets so bad that we place the traps around the perimeter of their property and treat the trap with a long lasting material so if the bees does not go into the trap it will still pick up enough material to kill it and stop it from bothering you.
Don't play around with a big nest of hornets. Some people think that if they bother the hive enough they will move. NOT TRUE. It is in their nature to build the nest as large as possible and to have as many bees as they can to guarantee survival. we have seen some nests as large as the cab of a small pick up with thousands of bees in there all will to attack to protect the hive and the queen. ALL AT ONCE IF NEEDED.
